Defiance County Economic Development Launches Four Flags of Freedom Campaign To Honor & Raise Funds For Local Veterans

DEFIANCE COUNTY, OH. — Defiance County Economic Development sets out to create one of the most patriotic campaigns in its County’s History, and along with it raise funds for veterans expanding or starting a business.

The goal is to raise money to position four massive American Flags, along U. S. 24 in Defiance, Ohio. Most likely the flags will be 30 x 50 in size. Exact positioning has not been determined yet. Once funds for the flags have been raised, the community will have the opportunity to purchase plaques to honor their loved ones who have served. The money from the plaques will go toward a fund to help area veterans expand or start up a new business. For details on purchasing a plaque or partnership opportunities visit: FourFlagsofFreedom.com

“So many times, people ask: what is Defiance County really known for. There are so many things to say, but the consistent theme is the pride of those who have served our country so we can have our daily freedoms. Our hope is to create a landmark in Defiance County to honor all veterans…it’s truly the least we can do!” stated Executive Director Erika Willitzer

So Why Four Flags? The Defiance County Economic Development office picked four to represent the following:

· One American Flag to represent those currently serving

· One American Flag for those who made it home safely

· One American Flag for those who were injured in war

· And the last flag represents those who didn’t make it home

“Four American Flags…There isn’t a better symbol for unity and patriotism than that. When people come into Defiance County, through the US 24 Corridor this new landmark will greet them, and immediately visitors will know the type of culture and community our County is,” said Marketing & Workforce Manager, Hannah Waterman, who is responsible for coming up with the name — Four Flags of Freedom!

Defiance County Economic Development’s Paige Johnson (Operations & Business Dev. Mgr.) is spearheading the research and coordination of this special project, “We are looking for partners, sponsors, and donors to make this happen. Our hope is that people from across the region, will see our vision and help us establish this local memorial to honor our veterans. The bonus is providing a funding — mechanism for Defiance County Vets expanding or wanting to start a business,” said Johnson.

If you have interest in helping, you are asked to visit either the Defiance County Economic Development’s website: www.DefianceCountyED.com or you can go to www.FourFlagsofFreedom.com . Contact information, along with items needed for the project are posted on the website.

“Everyone always classifies Defiance County as small, with an estimated 38,000 residents, and that may be considered small compared to many other communities, but what isn’t small — is our presence of strong patriotism! We encourage everyone to reach out to our office to help us in getting this off the ground. We’re the Home of the Free, Because of the Brave….so let’s show our veterans how grateful we are for their service.” said Willitzer.

Great idea! We might also clean-up all the trash along our ramps from Rt. 24

into our city. I don’t know if this is city, county, or state responsibility, but it is

not welcoming to our city….cigarette butts, bottles, trash of all kinds.
